{"id":33,"date":"2014-03-09T00:26:14","date_gmt":"2014-03-09T04:26:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/koreancourse.net\/?p=33"},"modified":"2014-03-09T00:26:14","modified_gmt":"2014-03-09T04:26:14","slug":"corean-or-korean-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/koreacourse.com\/?p=33","title":{"rendered":"Corean or Korean?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Or how about\u00a0<em>Goryeo<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>Someone told me that the spelling of &#8220;Corean&#8221; was used until the 20th Century, until when conquered by Japan, who decided to change it to be alpabetically after &#8220;J&#8221; (for Japan\/Japanese).\u00a0 True?\u00a0 What does\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Names_of_Korea\">Wikipedia think about Corean vs. Korean<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s complicated, just like life back in old Guryeo (another old variation).<\/p>\n<p>Turns out to be a mixed bag.\u00a0 There is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.medeasmemoirs.com\/corea-with-a-c\/\">this 2008 blog post<\/a>\u00a0which nicely traces Corea back to an earlier term&#8230; back to &#8220;Gogoryu&#8221;.\u00a0 Other people support\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.goldsea.com\/Air\/Issues\/Corea\/corea.html\">Corea\u00a0<\/a>as being the way to go.\u00a0 Separately, there are United States news articles and Korean postage stamps from the 19th Century which have the spelling as Korea.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe it just fell back to random chance that &#8220;Korea&#8221; won out over &#8220;Corea&#8221;.\u00a0 Which of these spellings do you use:\u00a0<strong>email\u00a0<\/strong>or\u00a0<strong>e-mail<\/strong>? \u00a0Is one easier to write (or type) while another perhaps easier to read? \u00a0I use both.\u00a0 But am willing to reconsider.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"corean korean food panchan\" alt=\"corean korean food panchan\" src=\"http:\/\/koreancourse.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/cyl-kfood-logo-300x266.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"266\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Or how about\u00a0Goryeo?
